Spanish A1 level — Absolute Beginner

It’s the first level on the CEFR scale (the European standard for describing language proficiency). It’s aimed at absolute beginners.

Communicative functions, grammar & culture

• Greetings and introductions
• Asking about and stating country of origin and nationality
• Expressing likes (e.g., Me gusta)
• Saying your age
• Talking about family, profession, and studies
• Describing people in a very simple way (appearance, basic personality)
• Ordering in a restaurant or café (simple food and drinks)
• Talking simply about daily routines and free time
• Locating objects in space (here, there, on top of, under, etc.)
• Indicating prices, quantities, and making simple purchases

Basic grammar & structures

• The alphabet and pronunciation
• Noun gender and number
• Definite and indefinite articles
• Subject personal pronouns
• Verbs ser, estar, tener, llamarse in the present tense
• Regular verbs in the present indicative (-ar, -er, -ir)
• Some irregular verbs; stem-changing verbs
• Affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences
• Descriptive and possessive adjectives
• Basic prepositions (en, de, a, con, para)
• Expressions of quantity (mucho, poco, bastante)
